Beginner Skating Programs

Learn To Skate Program

Basic Skills:  These eight levels include elements that are fundamentals for the sports of Hockey, Speed Skating, Figure Skating and Recreational Skating.  Each level (1-8) of our Basic Skills program contains different skill elements that must be mastered before advancing to the next level.  Upon completion of the Basic Skills program skaters will have gained the ability to skate forward and backward, with a fair amount of speed and agility, be able to do crossovers in both directions - incorporating turns and a variety of stops.  Basic Skills graduates are safe, confident skaters who are ready to further pursue their interests in skating through our Hockey Skills or Introduction to Figure Skating classes or simply have fun with the terrific sport of Ice Skating (35 minutes instruction)

Snowplow Sam:  This class is designed for young or preschool age skaters not yet ready for the Basic 1 level.  Skaters will develop basic balance and coordination and will be given an introduction to the preliminary moves of ice-skating.   Minimum age of 4 years old recommended.    Parents:  If you would like to join your tot on the ice for class please talk to Melissa or Peg in the office about our "Parents and Tots" class option.  (25 minutes instruction)

Adult Skills:  Equivalent to the Basic Skills class described.  Class sizes are generally smaller allowing for more individual attention.  It is a more relaxed atmosphere in which the adult skater can learn the fundamentals of a great sport.  (35 minutes instruction)

Introduction To Figure Skating**:  This class is designed as an introduction to Figure Skating.  Edge drills with control, jumps and spins, dance steps, positions and patterns are the preliminaries taught in this class.  (40 minutes instruction).

** Requirements:

  • You must have completed Level 5 of the Basic Skills Program or with permission of the director to enroll in Introduction to Figure Skating with Basic Skills.
